The inspiration for The Carmel came from foreign resort houses, where large windows allow an abundance of sunlight to fill the space, creating a relaxing atmosphere. The designer took this concept and incorporated it into the design, ensuring that natural light floods the house, bringing a sense of tranquility to every room.
One of the unique features of The Carmel is its use of a white and wood palette. The house owners specifically requested a design that would help them relax and escape from their hectic work schedules. The designer chose this palette to create a resort-like space that exudes a calming ambiance. The high ceilings of the house were utilized to their full potential, with two large ceiling lights added to the living room as a highlight, without compromising the open and airy feel of the space.
The open plan living and dining area of The Carmel encourages interaction among family members. With no barriers separating the spaces, the family can enjoy each other's company in a roomy environment. Additionally, the designer converted two rooms into a game room and a study room, providing private spaces where family members can work or have fun without disturbing one another.
The technical specifications of The Carmel include a 1,722 square-feet area, carefully designed to maximize functionality and comfort. The all-white palette, combined with light oak wooden furniture, creates a consistent and soothing atmosphere throughout the living and dining areas.
Overcoming the challenge of creating an all-white design that is not boring or dull, the designer strategically placed two ceiling lights in the dining area, used light oak furniture, and hung a colorful painting above the sofa as focal points. These elements add visual interest and prevent the space from feeling monotonous.
In response to the owners' need for ample storage space, the designer made use of the high ceiling level and incorporated various full-height cabinets with doors. This clever solution keeps the house neat and organized, without cluttering the space.
The Carmel was completed in December 2020 in Hong Kong, and it stands as a testament to the designer's meticulous research and attention to detail. By combining the elements of resort-like living, open spaces, and a serene color palette, Matthew Li has created a design that truly allows the family to unwind and enjoy quality time together.
The Carmel has been recognized for its outstanding design, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
